I've always thought The Damned are the most underrated British band. They released the first Punk Rock single ever and Dave Vanian has got to be one of the most original frontmen this country has ever produced. Still around too and celebrating 40 years on the road.
Captain Sensible has had more chart success than the band, with two really shit songs. What's that all about?

Speaking of Inspiral carpets I dug out 'life' the other day, took me right back. Also listened to a star sailor album too. Never got the recognition i think they deserved in the post britpop era that was awash with the likes of Keane travis etc.
I still don't get how shed seven never hit the big time

Good shout on Shed 7. Went to V in the early 00s and started watching Coldplay. They were so utterly boring (I had been a fan of their first album but they couldn't cut it live) we went off and stumbled across Shed 7 playing. They were fantastic. So many 'hit' songs.
But my favourite underrated group are Pretty Things. Amazing proper dark psychedelia.

Problem was Hasan's that in the early 90's, there were a bloody lot of good bands around the Indie scene, but most people were into the dance music, which had it's massive stage around then.
Indie nights in clubs were always on nights between Monday and Wednesday when less people wanted to go clubbing.

Inspiral carpets were definitely underrated. The Damned are a cult band overrated if anything. I used to see emo's every where with The Damned t-shirts on.

It's impossible to be objective, isn't it. And many bands get recognition/fame long after they started. That said, just 2 more groups who got much acclaim yet few sales (relatively)...
